After the morning check-in our group where the first to try one of Simons new games fresh from the print shop. We worked in small groups to lay out the timeline of historical events that have an influence on agile today, starting in the 15th century. It was an interesting exercise but the presentations got derailed a bit by participants who couldn’t appreciate the game for what it was and got annoyed by the fact that Asia, Africa and South America was left out of the game. Anyways, Simons summary at the end was enlightening and we where able to move on to the next exercise.

A part of the timeline

We covered topics like “meaning is socially constructed” the Cynefin framework, Agile Onion and how the brain works under stress.

I really liked Simons thoughts on the Complexity belief and the People belief but I find the Proactive belief a bit odd. Personally I would frame it as the Perfection belief, that we always strive to be better than tomorrow, not because we are proactive, but rather that it’s just the way we operate.

The flow of life model by Arnold and Amy Mindell was new and useful to me, I have to read more about that.

At the end of the day we talked ethics and how they guide our work. We did some case studies in small groups to explore how our ethics would guide us through different situations.

Fredrik and I hosted a great beer session that later turned into dinner. Frank, Susanne, Val and Boris joined from the course. I learned a new drawing exercise and about “black magic” and “smelly shirt”. We talked about language and culture and that you should always drink Belgian beer close to your bed so you can fall asleep just after finishing it.

And also Ruckzuck Zackzack
